Frank M. Butler, Jr.

March 6, 1925 ~ August 3, 2025

Frank M. Butler, Jr., a man of intellect and service to others, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025, in Fort Walton Beach, FL at the remarkable age of 100. He was surrounded by loving family and devoted companion, Joy Bates.

Born in Anniston, Alabama, to Frank and Adelaide Butler, Frank displayed an early aptitude for science. In 1943, Frank answered the call to duty, joining the Army Signal Corps. His ham radio skills were vital to maintaining communications across France and England during the war. He was stationed in France as the Battle of the Bulge loomed. Upon return, he pursued his passion for engineering, earning a degree from the University of Alabama. It was there that he married his high school sweetheart, Jean, embarking on a lifelong partnership. They then attended Ohio State University, a leading institution in radio, radar, and antenna technology.

From 1951 to 1988, Frank dedicated his talents to Eglin AFB as an electrical engineer. His work was instrumental in new and critical weapons systems. He was a key contributor to the development of countless communications, radar, and electronic warfare systems, leaving an indelible mark on national defense.

Beyond his professional achievements, Frank was a highly respected figure in the amateur radio community. As W4RH, he was an active ham radio operator and a leader within the Military Affiliated Radio System (MARS), holding influential positions at both the national and international levels. He generously shared his expertise, mentoring generations of radio enthusiasts.

Frank's love for music found expression in his voice. For 75 years, he sang tenor in the choir at the First Methodist Church of Fort Walton, where he also contributed to choir administration. His commitment to his faith and his community was unwavering.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean Dishman. Frank is survived by his brothers, Lowndes (Mimi) and Tom (Connie); his sons, David (Nellie) and Steve (Jacki); his grandchildren, Ryan (Stephanie), Michael (Kate), and Lisa (Jake); and his great-grandchildren, Claire, Katie, Thomas, and Valarie.

Celebration of Frank's life will be at the First United Methodist Church of Fort Walton on August 30th with visitation at 10:00 AM, funeral service at 11:00, followed by a reception and graveside service. McLaughlin Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
