Frank Vincent Mutolo, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and accomplished business leader, passed away peacefully in his
Yardley, PA home on October 7. He was surrounded by Joann, his wife of 62 years, and his family.
Frank was born in 1935 to Angelina (née Monti) and Vincent F. Mutolo in Queens, New York. Frank and his younger brother, Vito, were raised in an Italian home by their mother and grandmother, having lost their father to illness when Frank was eight years old.
Frank's artistic talent emerged at a young age. He was selected to attend a high school focused on the arts in New York City, where he studied across a range of media. After working briefly as an artist, he decided to pursue mechanical engineering and studied independently to qualify for admission to SUNY Maritime College. He graduated in 1959 as an officer in the merchant marines and earned a Bachelor of Marine Engineering.
Frank began his professional career designing submarines at M. Rosenblatt & Son, Inc. He later joined Thompson Industries, a linear motion bearing manufacturer. He patented new bearing technology that became the foundation for one of Thompson's most successful products. His outstanding work caught the attention of The Schaeffler Group, a German industrial company. Schaeffler recruited Frank to establish and lead a division in the United States. The division flourished under Frank's leadership. Frank was awarded a second patent before retiring in 2004.
Frank had a wide range of interests outside of his career. He was an avid reader, student of history, and active member of the Bucks County Open Space Committee, where he helped preserve farmland and natural landscapes. Frank also invested in small businesses and commercial and residential real estate. In his own home, he designed and built floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and cabinetry, which were the center of Christmas and family gatherings, and held family photos, books, and bottles of red wine. Above all, Frank cherished time spent with his family, who were the light of his life.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Vito. Frank is survived by his wife, Joann; son, Vincent; daughter-in-law, Eileen; and grandsons, Vincent and Trevor. He will be remembered for his quick wit, creative and adventurous spirit, and the love he gave to family and friends.
