Herbert Welber Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fitzgerald-Sommer Funeral Home - Yardley on Jan. 22, 2026.
Herbert Welber passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on January 14, 2026, at home in Yardley, surrounded by family. He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Gladys, his children Susan and William and their partners, Eric and Dawn, his most beloved grandkids, Jonathan and Brayden, his older sister, Shirley, his baby brother, Jack, and a slew of wonderful nieces and nephews and wonderful in-laws. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Philip and Rose, his older brother, Irwin and his wife Ellen, and his beloved brother-in-law, Dave Stone.

Herb often had a twinkle in his eye and was always ready with a dry joke. Other than his love and dedication to his family and extended family -- which was always foremost -- his life was marked by a lifetime love of sports: playing golf, ping pong, basketball, and tennis; swimming and fishing in the lakes of the Adirondacks; and following college and professional sports (especially the teams of his alma mater, the Florida Gators and Steve Spurrier).

He also had a steadfast identity as a New Yorker (despite 44 years in Pennsylvania). Born in Amsterdam, New York in 1935 to New Yorkers (one by way of Poland), he returned to New York after college to serve the Army while stationed at West Point and then started his personal and professional life as an accountant in New York City, where he met Gladys in the 1960s. For the rest of his life, he never really stopped rooting for the Knicks, buying his coffee and the Times at the local shop (the Wawa), and enjoying the thrill of driving aggressively in New York City traffic during his many visits to his daughter. For the last twenty years of his career, Herb worked at the Aydin Corporation, where he served as corporate controller for most of his tenure. The company sent him (and sometimes Gladys) on numerous trips to Turkey, London, Argentina, and Palo Alto, California. Herb was a dedicated professional who never missed a day of work.

The family held a celebration in his honor on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the Yardley Inn and has made private arrangements for his remains. For those who want to honor Herb from afar, we welcome donations in his name to the National Domestic Workers Alliance www.domesticworkers.org Herb could not have lived in the comfort of his home with worsening vascular dementia but for the loving care Gladys gave him with the support of the extraordinary aides Gladys was able to hire. We want everyone to benefit from such care by well-paid and respected workers when and if they need it most.

Herb's family loved him very much and will miss him greatly.

Arrangements are under the care of the FitzGerald-Sommer Funeral Home 17 S. Delaware Avenue Yardley, PA 19067. Condolences for the family can be left at www.fitzgeraldsommerfuneralhome.com.
