It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Frank Herbert Welts. On the night of October 10, 2023, Frank passed away peacefully in his sleep where he was being visited and comforted by family at home. He was 89 years old. He was born on March 21, 1934, to Frank Edger Welts and Norma Lee Welts (née Brotherson) in Los Angeles, California.
Frank Herbert Welts was a loving and devoted husband to Carol Anne Welts, father to Laura Christina Welts and Frank Andrew Welts and brother to Norma Woodword. He was a beloved friend to many, positively impacting the lives of numerous individuals throughout his life.
Frank was an athlete. In high school he ran track and field. In college he played water polo and worked as a lifeguard for the city of Los Angeles. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a radio technician; he was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. He later attended the University of Southern California, Los Angels City College, and Los Angeles Trade Technical College. He won the best athlete award in Water Polo at Los Angeles City College. After graduation, he worked for 3M in
Oxnard, California.
Frank and Carol were married on June 2nd, 1962 at the Epworth Methodist Church in Los Angeles; the same church where they met four years earlier during a choir rehearsal. In 1969, Frank relocated his family to
Rancho Bernardo, California, where he embarked on a new engineering role at Spin Physics, specializing in the design of tape-recording heads. He continued his career at Spin Physics through several mergers with Kodak and then Data Tape until his retirement.
In the early 1970's Frank and Carol joined the Westwood Wranglers Square Dance Club. They met many close friends dancing with the Wranglers. Many of these cherished friends later became companions in Marriage Encounter and Huggy Bunch camping adventures.
Frank's legacy extends beyond his family and friends. He was deeply involved with Hope United Methodist church, which Frank and Carol joined in 1978. He sang with the choir, as well as vocal ensemble Glory Bound. He was thrilled to be chosen to sing at Carnegie Hall with the Distinguished Concerts Singers International in June 2018 as part of the UMC choir. He also contributed his engineering expertise by building and managing the church's audio-video system. He was considered a fundamental pillar of the Hope United Methodist Church.
Frank was always eager to learn new things: whether it be with electronics, robotics, woodworking, or simply watching others build and design on the internet. He often spent time working on a new project in his garage or at his computer workstation. His final woodworking project was "Carol's cross" for Hope UMC in memory of his wife who passed in 2020.
Dedicated and generous to the church, Frank and Carol asked their children to establish a trust that would enable ongoing donations to their church for many years.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all those who have offered their support, condolences, and love during this difficult time. Frank's passing leaves a void that can never be filled, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who loved and admired him.
