Fred Batliner, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away
peacefully at the age of 91. Born on March 21, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, to Elizabeth and Adolph
Batliner, Fred's life was a testament to faith, family, and unwavering dedication to those he
loved.
Fred grew up in Chicago with his brother Jim, attending St. Alphonsus grade school and St.
George High School. His childhood was filled with close family connections and lifelong
friendships that he cherished throughout his life. During a high school dance, he met Geraldine
"Gerry" Brunken, the love of his life. They married on October 13, 1956, at St. Hilary's Church,
beginning a beautiful 68-year marriage that became the cornerstone of his life. Their
relationship, built on love, respect, and unwavering support, was an inspiration to everyone
who knew them.
Fred and Gerry raised their five children-Rick, Diane, Patty, Karen, and Tom-in Niles, Illinois,
in a home filled with laughter, love, and a strong sense of togetherness. He worked his entire
career at Santa Fe Railroad, retiring in 1988, and devoted his free time to his family and his
community. Fred's passion for family was evident in everything he did, from creating cherished
traditions to supporting each of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in their
endeavors.
A man of faith and service, Fred volunteered extensively for Glenkirk, an organization close to
his heart due to Karen's involvement, and at his parish, Our Lady of Ransom, where he ran the
St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. His compassion, generosity, and dedication to helping others
were hallmarks of his character.
In retirement, Fred and Gerry embraced a life of adventure, traveling the world together and
creating countless cherished memories. Yet, his greatest joy always remained his family, which
grew to include 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was a pillar of love and
wisdom, passing down lessons of faith, discipline, and togetherness that will live on for
generations.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Gerry; their children, grandchildren, and great-
grandchildren; and countless friends and family members. He is now reunited with his beloved
daughter, Karen, who will be waiting with open arms.
