Fred Lee Cariens, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed on October 6, 2024, at the Agape House of Lexington, South Carolina. Born on June 20, 1935, in Spartanburg, Fred was a devoted member of his community and a true testament to the enduring power of love and family. Fred's career as a barber was only the beginning of his remarkable journey through life. He nurtured his talents and worked his way up into management for Montgomery Industries in Spartanburg, reflecting his unwavering dedication and strong work ethic. Beyond his professional achievements, Fred was a proud veteran who served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Rising to the rank of Corporal, he embodied the courage and commitment that defined a generation.
Fred's education began in the public schools of Spartanburg County, where he laid the foundation for a life marked by learning and adventure. Known for his bright spirit, he was a very loving man who truly cherished the time spent with family and friends. Those who knew him will remember the warmth of his laughter and the kindness he so generously shared.
Avidly passionate about fishing, Fred found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially during those tranquil moments spent on the water. One of his proudest accomplishments was his role as a volunteer firefighter with the Westview - Fairforest Fire Department, where he dedicated many years to serving his community. He also took immense pride in building a cabin on Lake Murray, a labor of love that reflected his commitment to family gatherings and creating lasting memories.
Fred leaves behind his loving wife of 71 years, Peggy Cariens, whose companionship and shared experiences enriched his life immeasurably. He is also survived by his son, Dr. Michael Cariens and his wife Sherry of Lexington, SC; his daughter, Sandra Olle of Spartanburg, SC; and a vibrant lineage of grandchildren—Zac and Hale Higginbotham, Darby Baum (Nathan), Christopher James (Jessica), and Stephanie Sullivan (Tom). Fred's legacy continues through his great-grandchildren—Tyler Hardee, Weston Baum, and Liam, James, and June Sullivan—who will carry forward the love and values he imparted to them.
There will be a private memorial service at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, located at 2075 E Main St, Spartanburg, SC 29307 with interment to follow at a later date.
