Fred Gant, Jr. was born on June 16, 1953 in Bessemer, Alabama to Fred Bester Sr. and Ruby L. Gandy. He was the only child from this union. Ruby Gandy met and married James L. Gant in 1958. From this union three beautiful children were adopted; Annie Delorise, Fred Jr. and Jackie. He was educated in the Detroit Public School System. He graduated from Northern High School during the 1970s.
Fred Jr. was employed at Ford Motor Company and General Motors for several years which started his love affair with cars. Fred was affectionately known as "Caddy" in the neighborhood.
Fred, Jr. completed truck driving school in 1988 and drove trucks for several years.
Fred professed his faith in Jesus Christ at an early age and wasn't ashamed to let others know about the goodness of God. He later continued his faith walk in Greenville, Alabama after joining Pine Level Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Lindsey. Fred served on the Usher Board Committee.
Fred met and married Lorraine Jones in 1975. From this union one devoted son was born Carlos Jones.
Fred had two special gifts: His love for music anddancing, and he had a talent for being a master DJ. Whenever he played music family and friends would come just to hear him play, but most of all, they loved to hear him talk junk on the mic. He was a jack of all trades but working on cars and fixing things around the house were truly his gifts. He was especially stylish in his selection of clothing, and he had a smooth and coolpersonality about himself. One of his favorite sayings was "Ya Understand", which made everyone laugh and imitate him.
Fred was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in 2017 and began having health challenges. On December 3, 2021 he was admitted into Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama after having several mini strokes. Three weeks later, on December 23, 2021 God knew that he was tired and took him home to rest.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Bester Sr. and Ruby L. Gandy; and his devoted sister, Annie Delorise Moye. Also preceding him in death wereJames L. Gant and his play brother, Melvin.
Remembering him forever are his loving children: Carlos, Kiszi, Quijana, Ricco, and Dominique. Cherishing his memory is his loving sister, Jackie, his devoted niece Angel Fuller (LaVon) and several special nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his grandchildren Darren, Lamesa, and Maikya and hischildhood brothers for over 30 years: James and Jessie Mitchell; three devoted play brothers BrannonMcMeans, Anthony Hall, and Freddy Hall, as well as a host of loving aunties and cousins.
