Fred Griffin

Funeral services for Paton, Iowa native, Fred Griffin, age 95, will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at Slininger-Schroeder Funeral Home, Jefferson. Rev. Dennis Martens will officiate. Military rites and interment will be at Paton Twp. Cemetery, Paton, Iowa.

Francis Daryl "Fred" Griffin, son of Bernard and Lena Hansen Griffin, was born on September 4, 1930 at Paton, Iowa. Fred attended school in Paton and graduated from Paton High School in 1949.

Fred joined the United States Air Force on December 5, 1950 and attended aircraft and engine mechanic school at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, TX. On Fred's 21st birthday he arrived in Germany and was stationed at Rhein Main Air Force Base, Frankfurt, Germany for six years. He flew cargo planes as flight engineer; dropped paratroopers and heavy equipment for several countries. He flew the Berlin corridor from 1955-1958. Over the years, Fred was stationed on several different bases in the United States; he spent one year at Bein Hoa Air Force Base in Vietnam and then was stationed in Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. Fred retired from military service, in 1971, from KI Sawyer Air Force Base, Marquette, Michigan.

After returning to civilian life, Fred was employed in Boone, Iowa as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service for 17 years; retiring in September 1992.

Fred married Deloris Shorey on October 17, 1958 at Presbyterian Parsonage, Jefferson, Iowa, with Rev. Dick Harberts officiating. They were married for almost 48 years. The couple traveled to many different places over the years. They enjoyed fishing, walking through the woods hunting for berries; music shows and visiting their friends in several states. Due to Deloris' failing health the couple did not get to do much traveling after Fred's retirement in 1992. Deloris passed away on July 5, 2006.

Francis "Fred" Griffin, age 95, died on February 9, 2026, at Carroll, Iowa. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Deloris Griffin; and brother, Jack Griffin.

Surviving is one sister, JoAnn Griffin of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
