While he was at St. Joseph's Hospital recovering from a broken back from a sledding accident, he met Katie Shull; they married in 1960. Fred worked for George Fries at the Mobil Station several years before opening his own Mobil Station down on East Main Street; Fred's Friendly Service in 1961.
In 1968, he moved back to the family ranch to work with his dad, just north of Hilger, where he and Katie raised their four children: Dirk and Debbie, Tracy and Terri. Fred loved the farming and ranching lifestyle and loved watching any event or sport his kids and grandkids participated in. In the final months of his life, he enjoyed watching sports on television.
Fred was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and enjoyed the Hilger Community with such events as the Annual Trap Shoot and was instrumental in the organization of the Hilger Rural Fire Dept.
Fred is survived by his son, Dirk (Jane) of Hilger; daughters, Debbie (Michael) Rankin of Lewistown, Tracy (Paul) Myers of Billings, and Terri (Gary) Amberg of Butte; 10 grandchildren, Sonja Pospisil, Tasha (Doug) Wickens, Paul (Erin) Benes, Ryan (Kyrie) Benes, Robert Bolstad, Katie Bolstad, Dodie Myers, Nathan Bolstad, PJ Myers and Wyatt Hassler; 5 great-grandchildren, Hannah Pospisil, Trask Wickens, Evelynn and Emersyn Benes, and Abel Bolstad; and his only living brother, Arthur (Kathy) Hassler.
Fred was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Katie; his parents; his sisters, Colleen (Slim) Johnson and Evelyn (Gene) Wichman.
Parish Vigil and Praying Rosary will be at St. Leo's Catholic Church on Sunday, August, 7th, 5:00 p.m. with visitation to follow. Mass will be celebrated at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Monday, August 8th, 10:00 a.m. with Rite of Committal to follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the Winifred Ambulance, Hilger Rural Fire Department, Tough Enough to Wear Pink, or Hospice of Central Montana.
