Fred Hawkins Obituary

DYER CHAPEL-Funeral services for Fred Hawkins, age 89 of Cookeville, will be held Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 1:00 pm in the Dyer Chapel of Hooper, Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Pastor Cameron Wilson will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery (Pleasant Hill New Cemetery) 176 South Sycamore, Crossville, TN 38572.

His family will receive friends Saturday 10:00 a.m. until service time at the Dyer Chapel.

Fred Hawkins, a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his residence on September 30, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on June 15, 1936, in the small town of Hilham, TN, Fred would go on to live a life that touched the hearts of many in his community and beyond.

Fred dedicated nearly two decades of his life to the trucking industry as a driver for Fleetguard, a role that exemplified his hardworking spirit and dedication. However, it was his calling as a pastor that truly defined him. He served congregations in Boma, Hermitage, and Celina, TN, and spent seven meaningful years as the pastor of Cookeville First Church of God. His warmth and kindness drew people to him, creating a nurturing environment of faith and fellowship.

A proud veteran, Fred served in the United States Army, participating in both the guard and reserves. His military service reflected his commitment to his country and his sense of duty-a trait that he carried into every aspect of his life.

Known for his pleasant demeanor and friendly nature, Fred was a person who never complained, embracing life’s challenges with grace. He cherished time spent fishing and had a passion for automobile racing, hobbies that brought him joy and camaraderie with family and friends.

Fred's greatest pride, however, was his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Betty Marlow Hawkins; his sons, Mike Hawkins, Rick Hawkins, Tony Hawkins and his wife Tennille; his sisters, Lena Rose Tayes and Beatrice Gentry; and his brother, Willie Mayhue Hawkins. His legacy also lives on through his grandchildren, Asa and Judah Hawkins, and Roman and Ezra Hawkins, who brought him immeasurable joy.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Perry Milton Hawkins and Maudie C. Hooten Hawkins; his daughter-in-law, Valerie Slatton Hawkins; his stepson, Jamie Roberts; and his sisters, Mondona Oakes, Louise Elrod, Verdie Lee Adcock, and Norma Jean Hawkins. Each of these loved ones holds a precious place in the hearts of those who remain.

Mike Wilson, Aiden Wilson, Brayson Wilson, Roger Threet, Marvin Barnwell and Ronnie Rector will serve as pallbearers.

Memorial contributions are suggested to be made to Cookeville First Church of God, 1223 Fisk Road, Cookeville, TN 38501.
