Fred Kelley, 87, most recently living at the Vilas home in Plattsburgh, passed away Friday, July 19, 2024 at CVPH medical center. Fred was born in and called Plattsburgh home for his entire life.
The son of Edith (Deyo) and Fred Kelley, he is predeceased by his parents, his wife Doris, a sister Loretta Foster and her husband Glen, infant twins Daniel and James, half-sister Jane Patnode and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by his son Tim and his wife Christine, grandchildren Michael, Camryn, Allie and Jayden, great grand-daughter, Ilana, sister Helen Pepper and her husband Ed as well as many nieces and nephews.
After graduating from OLVA high school, Fred proudly served in the US Army earning the Good Conduct Medal. While enlisted, he survived the Middleton Nike Ajax Missile explosion before being Honorably Discharged.
After the service, Fred worked for the City of Plattsburgh for 30 years as a Mechanical/Heavy Equipment Operator while also helping to start the Union for City Employees. He also moonlighted as a manager at Plattsburgh Lanes for many years.
In his youth, Fred was an avid, multi-sport athlete, playing basketball, baseball, softball and bowling- a sport he continued for much of his adult life. In his later years, he still found entertainment watching sports, especially the Red Sox and Packers.
His family would like to give special thanks to his caregiver, Debbie Matthews, sister Helen Pepper and his niece, Michelle Cartier who spent a lot of time with him during his final days.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday July 24, 2024 from 11:00 to 1:00 pm at the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:30 pm at St. Peter's Church, burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Plattsburgh High School Booster Club.
Arrangements are entrusted to Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad Street, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.
