Fred Rogers Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carmichael Funeral Homes - Smyrna on Mar. 12, 2025.
Fred Howard Rogers
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Fred Howard Rogers, Jr., age 85, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, formerly of Conyers, Georgia. He passed away peacefully at his residence on March 11, 2025. He was the youngest child of Fred Howard Rogers, Sr., and Ocie Holtzclaw Rogers. He was born in his parents' rural Austell, Cobb County, Georgia residence, on December 21, 1939. Fred attended Campbell High School, Smyrna, Georgia, graduating in 1957. Shortly after high school, he joined the United States Air Force. He completed the required active-duty service, continuing as a reservist. He would be released from the Air Force after completing his contract on December 5, 1965. At the age of 18 years old, Fred would begin a career that would span more than 30 years with Terminal Freight Handling, a subsidiary of Sears, Roebuck and Company. This career would take him throughout the southeast, retiring in Chicago, Illinois at the Sears Tower in 1991.
Fred was often known as a craftsman and a jack of all trades. In 1973, Fred moved his family to Conyers and constructed his house in Deer Run Subdivision. The family would reside in this house for nearly 50 years. After retirement from Terminal Freight, Fred would return to the trade that he enjoyed: construction contracting. Fred operated many contracting companies and built many houses, concentrating in the Newton, Rockdale, and Henry County areas. This business would continue until his final retirement until 2008.
He is predeceased by his parents Fred and Ocie Rogers, sister Virginia (Richard) Brewer, and nephew Ricky Brewer. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Alethea Hudson Rogers, and children: Stephanie Howell (Mark) of Snellville, Georgia; Lauren Walls (Neil) of Smoke Rise, Georgia; and Jeffrey Rogers (Kimberly), of Dacula, Georgia. Grandchildren include Hannah Merritt (William), Abigail Howell, Zachary Walls, Zoey Walls, Zane Walls, Jacob Rogers, and Joshua Rogers. Additional survivors include many extended family members. The family would also like to recognize the services of caregiver LaTyrrell Pettitt. A funeral service will be held 12:30 pm Friday, March 14, 2025 in the chapel of Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna. Interment will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm Friday, March 14, 2025 at the funeral home. Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna is in charge of arrangements. www.carmichaelcares.com 770-435-4467

My family and I just learned of Fred's passing today.

My father, Richard Gravley, went to high school with Fred and remained friends for many years.

My father passed away in September of 2022. It was truly a blessing when Fred and Althea attended our father's service.

Because of the friendship that my parents had with Fred and Alethea they chose to name my sister 'Alethea' when she was born in 1962.

We are sad that we did not get this information sooner. We would have definitely honored Fred and attended his service.

God bless the Rogers family.
