Fred "Gary" Weatherford, Jr (91) went home to be with the lord on November 1, 2025. He was born on September 28,1934 in Norfolk, VA to the late Fred Gary and Marion Weatherford.
Fred, Sr was in the military so Fred, Jr. grew up in many different states such as Washington, California, Georgia and ultimately back to Norfolk where he met and married his high school sweetheart and wife of 57 years, Peggy.
Gary joined the Norfolk Fire Department in 1957 and retired after 27 years of service in 1984. Gary was also a professional free-hand sign painter and continued painting signs until Peggy was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2001 at which time he became her full-time caregiver. His hobbies included baseball and golf. He played many years of softball while in the fire department on the fire department softball league. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret "Peggy" Weatherford and his oldest son Fred Gary Weatherford II
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Sherry Twisdale and husband Charles of Virginia Beach, VA; son, Timothy J. Weatherford and wife Susan of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Jason Castaneda (Nanete), of Virginia Beach, VA, Tiffany Spencer of Belhaven, North Carolina, T. J. Weatherford of Roper, North Carolina and Katy Swope (Jesse) of Orange Park, Florida; and bonus granddaughter Elizabeth "Annie" Randolph of Norfolk, Va. Six great grandchildren: Jeremiah Spencer, Jakobi Castaneda, Neiko Castaneda, Dakota Maynor, Oaklyn Gibson, Holder Gibson and three bonus great grandchildren, Ryan, Ezra and Jacob Mixon along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Bethany Free Will Baptist Church, where Gary attended on November 30th, 2025 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethany Free Will Baptist Church. 2430 Azalea Garden Road. Norfolk, VA 23513.
