Frederick O. Bergh, fondly known as Fred, was born in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, on March 30, 1942, and lived a life defined by love, service, and adventure. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Frederick was a pillar of strength, resilience, and compassion. His life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to his family, community, and country. On July 26, 1969, he married the love of his life, Donna Joslin, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids. Their union was a beautiful journey of love, companionship, and mutual respect that spanned over five decades, creating a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
Frederick's dedication to service was remarkable. He served in the Army National Guard 1/120 Field Artillery Battalion from January 1964 to September 1999, rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class. Frederick's commitment to duty and excellence was a shining beacon, demonstrating the depth of his patriotism and his unwavering commitment to protecting his nation. He was recognized in Washington, D.C., as the national Runner-Up for the Chief of Staff Army Supply Excellence Award and The Honorable Order of Saint Barbara. After his retirement, Frederick discovered new passions that brought him great joy. He found peace and tranquility in hunting out west, fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, and camping at Ridgewood Campground for over forty years and wintering in Panama City Beach, Florida, for 23 years. His love for nature was only surpassed by his skill in wood carving comfort birds, a hobby that brought him immense satisfaction and happiness.
He was a generous man. He was always there for others, whether making soup, helping with repairs, or quietly helping someone in need. His kindness and caring nature touched everyone who knew him. He loved caring for his lawn and cars as well as taking pride in being a full-blooded Norwegian.
Frederick was well known for taking great care of the beloved 1968 Shell Lake green boat on the Wisconsin River, and regular stops from people for one of Fred's Old Fashions. Whether it was sharing a good conversation or cheering on the Green Bay Packers or the Wisconsin Badgers, Frederick created moments of warmth and connection that will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the care team at Edgewater Haven, Dr. Herdridge, and Dr. Mary Jo Zurawski for their unwavering support and compassionate care.
Frederick is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Bergh; his children, Nathan (Cynthia) Bergh, and Nicole (Stefan) Jankowski; his grandsons, Ethan and Evan Bergh; and his sister, Susan (Tom) Boudreau. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frithjof and Marion (Marks) Bergh; his birth mother, Anna (Horgan) Bergh, who passed giving birth to his twin brother Frithjof II; and he was also preceded in death by his brother, Donald Bergh.
UPDATE: A celebration of Frederick's life will be held on Monday, July 14, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at the Ridges Banquet Center in Wisconsin Rapids.
Frederick's life was a tapestry of love, duty, and joy. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Those who wish to honor Frederick's life are encouraged to share their memories, stories, and photographs on his memorial page. So sorry to hear of Fred´s passing. We spent many hours together when we were both employed by the Wisconsin National Guard, 1/120 Field Artillery. Fred was always a great help to me since we both worked in supply for the guard.
Fred was always willing to help others in need. He was very meticulous at everything he did. Our trip to Germany with our National Guard unit was very memorable and eventful.
Fred will be missed by all who knew him.

Donna, I was so sorry to read of Fred's passing. I remember him from way back when he first joined the Guard unit and worked with Gene and all the "regulars" there. Please know my prayers are with you at this time of loss for you and your family. Ruth Bauman
