Frederick A. Bowen, Jr., age 98, husband of Kathryn R. "Kiki" (Mattis) and the late Christine "Molly" (Kimes), of Phoenixville, PA, passed away on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 at home.
Born on January 21, 1926, in Shanghai, China, he was the son of the late Major Frederick A. and Bessie (Gleason) Bowen, Sr. In 1937, the family relocated to Manila, Philippines. After Japan's invasion of Manila in 1941, Mr. Bowen and his mother were interred for three years. Following the end of WWII, the family was reunited and settled in Phoenixville, PA.
Mr. Bowen was a 1947 graduate of Phoenixville High School. On June 4, 1951, he received his bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Ursinus College and that afternoon, married Molly Kimes in Washington Memorial Chapel, Valley Forge, PA. He went on the get his master's degree from Drexel University. He worked as a structural engineer for Day and Zimmermann, Gilbert Associates, and lastly for Roy F. Weston in West Chester, PA. From 1984 until 1988, his work at Weston International took him and his wife, Molly to Amman, Jordan. Mr. Bowen officially retired on June 4, 1988.
Mr. Bowen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Phoenixville. Despite his busy work schedule, Mr. Bowen was active in the lives of his children, as well as their friends. He served as assistant scout master for Boy Scout Troop 17, enjoying winter and summer camping trips at Camp Horseshoe in Rising Sun, Maryland. In retirement he enjoyed woodworking, model making and was an avid reader.
In addition to his wife, Kiki, Mr. Bowen is survived by five children: Frederick A. Bowen, III, husband of Ellen; Thomas Bowen, partner of Barbara Walters; Christine, wife of Jeff Winters; Sue, wife of Bill Leightcap and Kathleen ("Kathii") Murtagh, partner of Al Hyde; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024 at 1:30 PM, at the Campbell-Ennis-Klotzbach Funeral Home. Friends are welcome to gather between 1:00 PM and 1:30 PM. Private burial will follow at the Washington Memorial Chapel Cemetery in Valley Forge.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Dementia Society of America (dementiasociety.org).
