Frederick Ott Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Gramer Funeral Home – Diener Chapel - Shelby Township on Mar. 3, 2026.
Obituary for Frederick W. Ott

Frederick W. Ott, age 83, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, at Shelby Comfort Care. Born on August 25, 1942, in Detroit, Fred lived a life marked by dedication, creativity, and unwavering love for his family and community. For more than 50 years, he called Washington Township home, where he quietly built a legacy of craftsmanship, generosity, and steadfast strength.

Fred attended Cass Technical High School, where his natural mechanical ability was already evident. Gifted with skilled hands and a strong work ethic, he owned and operated a printing shop from his Detroit home and worked in the boating industry repairing engines. He spent many years working on automobiles, eventually dedicating the final 25 years of his career to the Ring and Pinion Shop in Clinton Township. In 2018, he retired after a lifetime defined by diligence and pride in his work.

Outside of his career, Fred embraced life fully. He loved square dancing, finding joy in its rhythm and fellowship. Alongside his wife, he helped run Funland Ceramics from their home, combining artistry with community connection. He was an enthusiastic collector of H.O. scale model trains and took great pride in designing and building detailed train layouts. In retirement, he and his wife devoted countless hours to creating an expansive layout in their basement, a shared labor of love. Fred also enjoyed memorable travels to France and Spain, experiences that broadened his horizons and enriched his life. He was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica.

Above all, Fred treasured his family. He met the love of his life, Ann Marie, while roller skating, and they were married on October 15, 1966, at St. John Lutheran Church in Fraser. Together they built a home filled with faith, laughter, and enduring devotion.

Fred is survived by his beloved wife, Ann Marie; his sons Paul (Rayna), Mark (Jenny), and Neil (Mandy); his grandchildren Anthony, Connor (fiancée Madison Dettloff), Nathaniel (Taylor), Darian (Hannah), Madison, and Bryce; his great-grandson Benji; and his brother James. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 5, from 4:00–8:00 PM at Gramer Funeral Home – Diener Chapel, 48271 Van Dyke Ave., Shelby Township. Additional visitation will be held on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral service at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 6, at 11:00 AM at Gramer Funeral Home – Diener Chapel, 48271 Van Dyke Ave., Shelby Township. Following the service, family and friends will lead in procession to Christian Memorial Gardens West, where Fred will be laid to rest.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to Trinity Lutheran Utica or any charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Fred lived with humility, integrity, and a generous spirit. Through the things he built, repaired, and lovingly created - and most importantly through the family he cherished - his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
