He was born in Kittanning, PA on December 30, 1932. He was the son of L.A. and Mary O’Connor Schry.
Fred graduated from Kittanning High School in 1951. He served in Korea for two years with the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Corporal. He attended St. Vincent College graduating in 1957. During this time, he met his future wife, Donna Bearer, who happened to be a sister of his friend. They were married in August of 1958. Fred and Donna moved to Ellwood City, joining his brother, James, in establishing Culligan Water of Lawrence County. Always the astute businessmen, Fred and Jim became aware that the nearby restaurant, The Golden Freeze, was for sale. The two purchased and remodeled the building and renamed it Cully’s Restaurant. The Schry’s owned Cully’s from 1972 to 1982.
In addition to enjoying and loving his growing family, Fred’s favorite pastime was restoring their former home on Chapel Drive. After much labor, the 1830 Greek Revival structure was placed on The National Registry of Historic Places.
Playing tennis with Donna was a pleasure also. Fred delivered Meals on Wheels to clients in Ellwood City for many years and also worked with the local Carpenters Project. He was a member of Holy Redeemer Church, Divine Grace Parish, Ellwood City Chamber of Commerce, and the Ellwood City Area Historical Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sara (Robert) Beatty, and brother James.
