Frederick G. Fritz Winegarner, M.D., age 87, of Marion, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 21, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Margaret J. Winegarner and six children: David C. (Dana) Winegarner of Lewis Center, Ohio; LeeAnne (John) Likens of Westerville; Monica P. Brooks of Marion; Derek B. (Erin) of Marion; Daniel P. (Amber) of Marion; and Robin L. (Kyle) Landon of Delaware, Ohio; sixteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Richard M. Winegarner, Healdsburg, California, Thomas A. Winegarner, San Rafael, California, and Robert F. Winegarner, Oakley, California. He was preceded in death by his parents, Barr G. Winegarner and Frances (Nesbitt) Winegarner; wife, Carlone Centner Winegarner, a son, Eric C. Winegarner and a brother, William (Bill) Winegarner of Columbus, Ohio.
Fritz attended Williams College in Masschusetts. He was a graduate of OSU Medical School. Upon completing his surgical residency, Dr. Winegarner was drafted into the army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Japan where he took care of several thousand wounded soldiers.
Dr. Winegarner and his family moved to the Marion area in 1978 where he practiced general and vascular surgery for over 40 years. Fritz was a very compassionate man who cared deeply for his patients. His surgical skill combined with his faith in God made him unique in his ability to minister physical, as well as spiritual healing to his patients. He was often known to pray for his patients before and after surgery. His unique gifts made him a successful healer which was his calling since childhood.
Fritz always thought the best of people and gave them the benefit of the doubt. He loved his family and friends unconditionally. He loved adventure and vacations including: skiing, horseback riding in the mountains of Colorado, white water rafting, parasailing, zip-lining and repelling. He enjoyed taking his children to Cedar Point and riding all the fast and furious rides he could. Upon retirement, he realized his dream of raising Belgian horses and could often be seen driving the horses and wagon down the road and through the pasture.
A celebration of life service will be held on Monday, August 29, 2022 at Cornerstone Alliance Church, 2010 Marion-Marysville Road, Marion, Ohio. Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at the church with a service following at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Alliance Church missions fund.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of your family. I worked at Marion General Hospital on the surgery floors and in pre-admission department for almost 22 years. What a kind, compassionate and caring person your beloved Fritz was. He always treated me and all the other nurses well.

I worked in surgery for seven years and was amazed to find a surgeon who was kind and humble. What a good surgeon he was and we all knew he loved his big family. Wish that all your good memories will comfort you. Debbie Caudill
