Gail DuVall Jankowski 72, a beloved wife, mother and community leader, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on March 12, 2025 in the presence of her family. Her brave battle ended against duodenum cancer then liver cancer over the last three years. She is predeceased by her parents, Jacque Duvall in 1960 and Altha Brothers in 2004.
Gail graduated from Kennedy High School in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1971 and graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Maryland in 1977. She met her husband Joseph Jankowski when they worked at COMSAT Laboratories, and they married on September 3, 1978. Gail and Joe lived on a houseboat together in Washington, D.C. for two years, renovated a house in Silver Spring then built a house together in Rockville in 1983.
Gail worked in human resources, administration, and marketing while dedicating most of her energies to raising two wonderful children. One of Gail's greatest attributes was her ability to organize, which included being general contractor of the many home building and renovation projects, and planning trips or family activities. She began a tradition of gatherings for her extended family during the week of Thanksgiving, which her children now have renamed as 'Janksgiving'.
Gail and Joe retired to Berlin, Maryland near Ocean Pines in 2006, where they renovated their waterfront home. Gail remained active in the community serving in numerous roles in the Ocean Pines Garden club, Indivisible Worcester, Daughters of the American Revolution, Worcester County Democratic Women's Club, and founding the Protectors of the Saint Martin River. Her support, friendship, laughter and smile will be missed by many.
Gail is survived by her husband Joseph Jankowski of Berlin, Maryland; her daughter Emily Jankowski of Sykesville, Maryland; her son Thomas Jankowski of West Friendship, Maryland and her grandchildren Jack, Henry and Maggie Ruth Newton of Sykesville, Maryland and June, Mateo and Liam Jankowski of West Friendship, Maryland.
A celebration of life is planned at the Atlantic Hotel on 2 North Main Street in Berlin, Maryland on Sunday May 4, 2025 starting at 12 noon.
