Garfield Freeman

It is with deep sadness Garfield (Ook) Freeman peacefully departed this world on February 6th,2024. He passed very peacefully with his loving family by his side. His loss leaves a void that will forever be in our hearts. He was born March 15, 1940 to the late Alexander and Sallie Holtsclaw Freeman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several half brothers and sisters: George Freeman, Ray Freeman, Ted Freeman, Myrtle Freeman Birchfield and Mable Freeman Gouge.
Those left to cherish his memory are his caring wife Martha Julian Freeman. Two children, Lesia Freeman Griswold (Alan) Edgewater Florida, Tim Freeman (Chrystal) Roan Mountain. Two grandchildren, Garrett Freeman (Kala), Gracie Freeman and a new precious great-grandchild Renae Dawn Freeman all of Roan Mountain. Also, several brothers, sisters, family members and friends survive: Bob Freeman, Frank Freeman (Sharron), Buck Freeman (Sherry), Barbara Freeman McKinney, Pat Freeman Chambers, and Kathie Freeman Storie (Leslie). Several nieces, nephews, a very special sister-in-law Betty Julian Shell and friend Peggy Gearldine Slaughter Whitehead.
Garfield was a lifelong resident of Roan Mountain where he and Martha owned and operated Freeman's Body Shop, Freeman Automotive and Freeman Used Cars for over forty years. Also, his love in life was drag racing, where he was well known in the racing community. He was a tough competior and won many races throughout his career. The racing community was his second family where he made many life-long friends. After retirement he and Martha moved to Heaton Creek where his love was mowing and taking care of his property so it would look like a golf course. He also continued his love for drag racing by watching his grandchildren Garrett and Gracie drive Junior Dragsters and his son Tim drive a race car for many years. Tim is still working for NHRA in the Pro Stock Division and Garfiled enjoyed watching the races and following Pro Stock on the NHRA circuit on TV on the weekends.
A service to celebrate Garfield's life will be conducted at the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Roan Mountain on Friday February 9th at 7 pm. The family will receive friends before the service from 5 until the time of the service.
The graveside will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday February 10, 2024 at Holtsclaw Family Cemetery. Those that would like to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick of Roan Mountain to go in procession. Active Pallbearers will be his nephews and great nephews: Dean Freeman, Michael McKinney, Chad Mckinney, Jerome Storie, Cody McKInney, Matthew Houston and Hayden Houston. Honorary Pallbearers will be his special friends and loved ones, Leslie Storie, Mark Houston, P.J. Moody, Terry Jones, Cody Hughes, Casey Hughes, Robert Heaton, Brayden Christman, Darrel Johnson, Wayne Perry, Rick Heaton, Rick Miller, Johnny Ledford, Doug Barnett, and Larry Shell.
He is now pain free and I'm sure if there is grass in heaven he is already mowing.
