He was a skilled horse trainer and owner of Garry Simms Racing. Garry had a keen eye for young talented thoroughbred horses and had a passion for developing them. He was one of only three trainers to win the Debutante and Bashford Manor Stakes in the same year. An entrepreneur at heart, Garry owned several businesses, The Cue Club, Double Down Sports Bar, Do-All Concrete, Simms Trucking and Miracle Stables.
He enjoyed playing pool, poker and had a passion for physical fitness. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and adored his beautiful granddaughters.
Garry was a Kentucky Colonel. His life mission was to help everyone. He was a selfless, loyal friend to many. One of his greatest accomplishments was overcoming addiction through AA which he loved. He has been sober for 22 years with his motto being "One Day At A Time". Being a man of God, he was known to share his favorite saying with all, "Keep The Faith".
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Raffo and Flossie Florene (Hardin) Simms; his stepfather, James Stinnett; and his brother, John Robert "Bobby" Simms and his wife Jean Simms.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Dianna (Neff) Simms; sons, Garry Wayne Simms, Jr. (Abbie) and Zack Simms; his daughter, Ashley Larson (Tyler); his beloved granddaughters, Kaelyn Whitehouse, Venice Larson, Allie Simms, and Piper Simms; nephews, Bryan Simms (Sandi) and Robbie Simms (Jeannie); great nephews, Tyler, Tanner, Trevor and Evan Simms; great niece, Emily Simms; and a host of many good friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2025 at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home – Jeffersontown, 10600 Taylorsville Road with burial in Grove Hill Cemetery, Shelbyville, KY.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 from 12 – 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 10 am. – 1 p.m.
