Garth Stokes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Chapel & Cremation Center - South Jordan on Mar. 11, 2026.
Garth Stokes, age 85, of West Jordan, Utah, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026.

Garth was born on June 14, 1940, in Cleveland, Utah, to James and Zella Stokes. He spent his early years in Emery County and attended North Emery High School, Garth enjoyed participating in several team sports, including basketball, baseball, and pole vaulting, and he graduated in 1952.

Following high school, Garth moved to Salt Lake City where he began a long and dedicated career as a meat cutter. He worked for Jordan Meat for more than 15 years, becoming well known for his strong work ethic. Later, he continued his working career at Generator Exchange, rebuilding starters before eventually retiring.

In 1961, Garth married his sweetheart, Donna Marshall Stokes. Together they raised 4 children and built a loving home and shared 62 wonderful years of marriage before Donna's passing in 2023.

Garth had many hobbies throughout his life. He loved bowling and was especially good at it, spending many years participating in various bowling leagues and enjoying the friendships that came with the sport. His greatest passion, however, was horses. Garth began riding at a young age and carried that love throughout his life. After he married, he became involved in training and racing horses, participating in both flat track racing and chariot racing. He also cherished time spent riding with local riding clubs and fellow horse enthusiasts.

Garth also loved the outdoors. He grew up hunting and fishing, which were among his favorite pastimes, and he treasured the many trips and memories he made with family and friends.

Garth is survived by his daughters, Tammy Johnson (Monte) and Tiffany Johnson; his son, Brandon Stokes and Mike Austin; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Donna; his parents, James and Zella Stokes; his son, Brett Stokes; his brothers, James, Donald, Ray, and Gary Stokes; and his sisters, Corinne Stokes, Helen Robbins, and Reva Gordon.

Garth will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his love of the outdoors, and the joy he found in the company of family, friends, and horses. His family and friends will deeply miss him.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, located at 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, Utah. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the same location. An additional viewing will take place on Wednesday from 10:00–10:45 a.m., prior to the funeral service.
