Garvin Duane Massingill

 

Funeral services for Mr. Garvin Duane Massingill will be conducted at 1:00 PM Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at First Pentecostal Church of Jackson with the Reverend Greg Frazier officiating, assisted by Reverend Hansel Stanley and Reverend Rick Free. Interment will follow in the Crestview Memorial Gardens in Brandon, MS. Mr. Massingill, age 84, entered into the eternal rest of his Lord Wednesday evening, November 27, 2024, surrounded by his family at his home in the Star community of Rankin County. Saulters Moore Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.

The family will receive friends Monday evening, December 2, beginning at 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at First Pentecostal Church. Visitation will resume Tuesday, December 3, at 12:00 Noon, one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

 After graduating from Louisville High School in 1959, Garvin ventured to Jackson, MS, where a cousin introduced him to his future bride, Earnestine Mitchell, on a blind date. Their love blossomed, leading to a joyful union that welcomed two daughters into their lives. The couple settled in Southwest Jackson, where they created a loving Christian home for their children.

A United States Army veteran, Mr. Massingill dedicated most of his working life to the trucking industry and was known for his hard work and dedication. He retired after many years of service with Linde Trucking but remained active and engaged even in retirement, taking on a position with Southern Transport for several years. Mr. Massingill’s commitment to serving others also extended to his playing an instrumental role in the early years of Greater Jackson Mortuary Service. Working alongside Kevin and Jennifer Hughes, he compassionately transported deceased individuals to funeral homes across the United States, ensuring they received the utmost care and respect.

Deeply devoted to his Lord and the Apostolic message, he and his family became integral members of the First Pentecostal Church, uniting during its formative years at 1505 Robinson Street. His love for Jesus shone brightly through his tireless involvement within the church community. Known affectionately as Brother Massingill to his church family, he spent countless Saturdays as a captain of the FPC Bus Ministry Team, working diligently to invite children from the neighborhoods of Jackson to the open arms of Pastor Thomas L. Craft and a loving congregation. He believed every child deserved the opportunity to learn about Jesus and dedicated his time to tilling the ground each Saturday, preparing for his bus route the following Sunday.

A lifelong student of God's Word, Brother Massingill also served as an usher and Sunday School teacher at First Pentecostal Church for many years, sharing his knowledge of the Word of God and instilling values in others.

Outside of his unwavering commitment to family and faith, Mr. Massingill was an avid hunter, relishing the thrill of the outdoors and proud of his impressive record of once killing two turkeys with a single shot.

Mr. Massingill is preceded in death by his parents, William Edgar and Earline Massingill; sister, Cornelia Barrett (Ned); brothers, James Felbert Massingill, Bobby Massingill and his brothers-in-law, Ed Harthcock and Larry Chalk.

His memory will forever be cherished by his beloved wife of 64 years, Earnestine M. Massingill of Star; 2 daughters, Lynn Massingill Free (Rick) of Pearl, Angie Fay Massingill of Star; 2 sisters, Peggy Harthcock and Linda Chalk, both of Brandon and his sister-in-law, Peggy Massingill. Mr. Massingill also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews.
