Gary Bishop, age 86, of Huron passed away Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.

His memorial service will be held at a later date.

Gary Blaine Bishop was born July 18, 1939, to Perry Bartell Bishop and Thelma Marie (Thompson) Bishop in Brookings. He grew up in North Dakota and later moved to Sioux Falls, where he graduated from Washington High School in 1957.

Gary entered in to the United States Navy at the age of 17, and was honorably discharged in 1963.

Gary married Elaine Benz and to this union, Vicki, Connie and Blaine were born.

Later, he married Irene Harmon.

On July 10, 1974, Gary married Mary L. Hershman in Huron. To this union Jason and Heather were born.

Gary was an electrical engineer for Western Electric and retired in 1995. He then worked as a greeter at Walmart for several years.

He loved attending auctions and garage sales. Gary enjoyed the great outdoors, especially when working in his yard. He cherished time spent with family playing the Hand and Foot card game.

Gary was a member of the Virgil American Legion and the CWA (Communications Workers of America).

He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Harold and Lorraine Hershman; and one daughter, Connie.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife of 51 years, Mary Bishop of Huron; his children: Vicki (Edward) Tirrell-Lotterman of Falcon Heights, MN, Blaine (Jennifer) Tirrell of Mitchell, Troy (Christine) Christopherson, Harold (Mary) Christopherson, Jason (Angie) Bishop of Miller, and Heather (Justin) Wels of Watertown ; his grandchildren: Isaac, Noah (Hayley), Caelan, Heidi and Jacob (Ashley), Kolt (Kelsie), Taylor, Gavin (Katrina), Malori, Tawnya and family, John, Richard, Micala (Austin), Lexi, Kobe, and Owen; and his great-grandchildren, Braxton, Aurora, Quinn, Emmy, Kourtney, Korbin, Kayce, Khloe, and Kinsley.

Gary is also survived by his brother, Gale (Kata) A. Bishop of North Dakota; his ex-wife, Elaine Benz-Misfeldt; and many nieces and nephews.
