Gary Leo Coenen was born to Henry and Dorothy (Gross) Coenen on November 28, 1954, in Harlan, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Woodbine High School. He lived a life marked by dedication and hard work, starting his career in various capacities before finding a fulfilling position at Vulcan in Missouri Valley, Iowa from which he eventually retired. He was blessed with a long-term relationship with Juli Michel for over 20 years.

Gary was known for his love of the great outdoors. He enjoyed moments spent ice fishing and camping at their place along the river, appreciating the tranquility and beauty of nature. As an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes Football team, he found joy in cheering for his favorite players, sharing the excitement of the game with friends and family alike. Gary’s most treasured times were spent with his family, and he will be lovingly remembered by those whose lives he touched.

Gary died on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa at the age of 71 years and 15 days.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Joe Coenen and Father Tom Coenen. Along with Juli, he is survived by his children, Travis, Jennifer, Molli and Wyatt; grandchildren, HalleMay and Jace; sisters, Mary and her husband Todd Heistand and Jackie and her husband Scott Clark; and many other relatives and friends.

The family will be having a celebration of life in the spring.
