Gary Cole Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lewis Funeral Home - Navarre Chapel on Mar. 16, 2026.
Mr. Gary Lyle Cole a devoted husband, proud veteran, and beloved educator, passed away peacefully on March 5th, 2026, at the age of 77.

Born in Bath, New York, Gary showed remarkable resilience from an early age. As a child, he overcame the challenges of Polio, a hardship that shaped the determination and quiet strength he carried throughout his life. Though he had long dreamed of becoming a teacher, his path changed when he was drafted during the Vietnam War. Answering the call to serve, he went on to complete three tours in Vietnam during what would become a distinguished 30-year military career.

In a reflection of his courage and selflessness, it was only recently discovered that he had been awarded the Bronze Star Medal for valor during his service in Vietnam-an honor he never spoke about during his lifetime, choosing instead to carry his service with humility and quiet dignity.

After retiring from the military, he returned to the dream he had once set aside. He spent 15 years as an English teacher, becoming beloved by students and colleagues alike. Known for his humor, and encouragement, he inspired countless students and left a lasting mark on those fortunate enough to sit in his classroom.

He shared 34 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Catherine Cole building a life grounded in love, loyalty, and partnership. Together they enjoyed traveling and creating lasting memories, especially on the cruises that brought him great joy and adventure.

Despite the many challenges he faced in life, he remained a man defined by resilience. His life was one of quiet strength-serving his country with honor, guiding young minds as a teacher, and cherishing the people closest to him.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 34 years, Catherine Cole, his daughter, Brandi Cole, grandson Alijah Lee and sisters Marsa Kent and Victoria Dandrea with whom he shared a special and cherished bond, along with extended family, friends, former students, and all whose lives he touched.

A memorial will be held on March 20th, 2026, at 9:30 am at Barrancas National Cemetery followed by a Celebration of Life at Navarre Beach Dolphin pavilion.

For all those attending the committal service at Barrancas National Cemetery, a procession will meet in the parking lot of Olive Baptist Church, WARRINGTON CAMPUS, 103 W. Winthrop Ave, Pensacola, FL 32507, 30 minutes prior to the service at the cemetery.
