Gary Alan Comp, age 81, of Mechanicsburg, died on Friday, March 22, 2024. Gary was born on Tuesday, December 22, 1942, in West Fairview, PA to the late David Ira Comp Sr and Effa Virginia (Taylor) Comp. In addition to his parents, Gary is preceded in death by his two brothers: David Ira Comp Jr and Daryl Comp.
Gary’s survivors include his wife of 30 years, Deborah “Deb” Kaye (Hedrick) Comp; his god-daughter, Cassandra Hedrick of Carlisle, PA; and his former spouse and friend, Mary Frost.
Gary attended East Pennsboro High School. He loved his country, and served in the Army National Guard. Gary retired from Liberty Excavators. He loved his job, saying “I never grew up, I just kept playing in the dirt”. Gary played steel guitar for 60 years. He played with his father for 23 years in the “Country Cousins”, then with “Mary and the Raiders” for 2 years, with the “Jack Daniels Band” for 10 years, and then with “Borderline Band” for 25 years. Gary truly loved his music. He was an avid Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State fan. Gary always felt blessed to have the wonderful parents he had, and he made sure to pass those blessings along to others. He always had a smile on his face, and would do anything for anyone at any time. Gary found great satisfaction in being of service to others. He will be dearly missed by those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
All are welcome to join Gary’s family at his viewing on Thursday, March 28, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and again on Friday, March 29, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. at Buhrig Funeral & Cremation, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Chaplain Edward Rabenstein officiating. Gary’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service. Burial will follow the reception in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens in Carlisle. Honored to be pallbearers are: Bill Hedrick, Davey Comp, Keith Hedrick, Kelly Little, Roger Hedrick, Shawn Hedrick, Tom Baughman, and Ty Shoop.
The family sends their most heartfelt thanks to everyone at Residential Hospice who so lovingly cared for Gary during his illness.
