Gary Ray Dowell, 69, of Gordonsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at UVA Hospital. Born on November 15, 1956, he was the son of the late Oscar Ray and Ann Mae Dowell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Dowell, and his sister, Linda King.
A devoted family man, Gary was known for his hardworking nature and strong sense of duty. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for three years, before dedicating forty years of his life to North Anna Power Plant. After retiring, Gary found great joy in spending time with his grandchildren, enjoying the simple pleasures of life, and passing down the wisdom he had gained over the years.
Gary's love for his family was immeasurable, and he took great pride in the accomplishments and happiness of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed gathering with his loved ones, whether it was for a holiday celebration, a backyard barbecue, or simply enjoying a quiet moment together. His gentle humor, calm demeanor, and generous heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Suzi Dowell, and their four children: Tiffany Polo (Richard), Gary Ray Dowell Jr. (Amanda), Matthew Dowell (Marilyn), and Cynthia Schmitt (Billy). He is also survived by his sisters, Gloria Bouton, Ginger Thomas, and Becky Thomas, as well as his cherished grandchildren: Korey, Natalie, Ethan, Jameson, Lyla, Ezlyn, and Rowyn.
A celebration of Gary's life will be held at a future date, where friends and family can come together to honor his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Gary's name.
He will forever be remembered for his love, his laughter, strong beliefs and the strength he showed throughout his life.
