Gary Lee Goodwin, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 4, 2024, in
Howell, Michigan, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 17, 1953, in Fairfield, Iowa, to Rosemary (Schaefer) Goodwin and the late Wilford Goodwin, Gary's infectious laughter and warm presence brought joy to all who knew him.
Gary's life was one marked by dedication and joy. He shared many beautiful years with his beloved wife, Melissa (Purvis) Goodwin, and together they raised a family that included their children Stacy Silver, Kelly Toms, and Christopher Goodwin. The legacy of his love continued through his adoring grandchildren-Dwight, Abby, Conner, Todd, Evelyn, Sophia, Owen, Hadley, Mason, and Jackson-who will forever cherish memories of their grandfather's kind blue eyes and warm smile.
A natural athlete, Gary was a formidable competitor on the All-World softball team championship, where he left an indelible mark with his talent and sportsmanship. His professional career was spent in Quality Control at Michigan Rod, where his keen eye for detail and commitment to excellence were hallmarks of his work. Gary's interests extended beyond the diamond and the workplace. He was an avid golfer, bowler, and a dedicated fan of football. His love for sports was only matched by his love for people. Gary was the embodiment of a team player, both on the field and off, always ready to share a laugh or lend a supportive ear. He found joy in the simple pleasure of gathering with friends and family, where he was often the best father, husband, and friend one could ask for.
He leaves behind not only his immediate family but also his in-laws, Larry and Barb Purvis, who, along with his mother Rosemary, and sister, Kathi Worrall, will miss his presence deeply. Gary's light shone brightly in the lives of all who knew him, and his absence will be profoundly felt. His sister, Debbie (Goodwin) Smith and father, Wilford Goodwin, preceded him in death, and one can find comfort in the thought of their reunion.
Gary's life was a beautiful reflection of the things he valued most – love, laughter, and relationships. He was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life, be it watching a game with friends or cherishing a quiet evening at home with his family. His approach to life was a lesson in cherishing every moment and making lasting memories with those around him. In the quiet moments, when the sun casts long shadows on the golf course or when the cheers echo after a great play, we will remember Gary. In the warmth of family gatherings and the laughter of friends reunited, his spirit will live on. Gary Lee Goodwin, loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and friend, may have left this world, but his legacy will continue to light the way for all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Gary's honor on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at the Howell Eagles Club from 2-6pm. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.
