Longs,
Gary Allen Goodwin 75, of
Longs, South Carolina passed away at home surrounded by his family on January 11, 2026. Gary, Dad, Pops, Popsie and Coach were names he carried.
We both appreciated the Home Health Care ladies that have come to our home the past year. They have treated Gary like one of their family, and for that we will be forever grateful.
Gary loved to play Golf up until he was unable to walk anymore. Enjoyed the guys he played with and made lasting friendships.
His real passion was soccer. He coached girls soccer for 30 plus years from Kindergarten to College. Watching those little girls grow into young Moms with kids of their own. Some even have their kids play soccer. Still watching his favorite pro teams on TV. He was very touched in his last few days when several girls from prior teams of his reached out to him with cards, letters and calls.
Gary loved him some sweets and would partake whenever he could. Food in general is another passion for him. He also liked having his matching outfits from his hats down to his shoes. (Adidas)
Gary is survived by his wife Karen, aka Pookie, having been together for more than 50 years. They completed each other. His daughter Lindsay which was his side kick in her younger years and still remains "Daddy's little girl". "His favorite granddaughter" Brianna is the Light of his life.
She described him as Dad, Pops, Popsie and her best friend. They have such a special bond, having watched her grow from a baby into a wonderful young adult. We are very proud of the things she has accomplished at such a young age. Last but not least, Greg (SIL) the son he never had. He has enjoyed having another man in the house. They could talk about anything. He is very proud of the father he has become to Bri and the "Partner in Crime" he is with Lindsay. A very hard working man with a sense of humor, he has made a good home for his family.
Most of Gary's family has passed before him, which includes his Mom, Brother, and Sister, but still has nieces and nephews who live out of state.
The family is intending to have a celebration of life at a future date. In the meantime, in Gary's memory. We encourage you to celebrate with random acts of kindness, buy a coffee, hold a door, help an elderly person etc. it will make your day as much as it does theirs.
To all of our lifetime friends I appreciated you being here for us ALWAYS !
