Maurice Gary Hart, 83, of Grand Ledge, known affectionately to friends and family as Butch, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on October 23, 2024, in Portland, MI. Born on February 1, 1941, in Lansing, MI.
Butch's life was one marked by devotion to his family, a passion for his interests, and a commitment to his work. He leaves behind his loving wife of 43 years, Carolee Hart, and their cherished children: daughter Beth (Brian) Aprill; sons Chad (Megan) Bassett, Dale (Sue) Bassett, and Todd (Debi) Bassett. Butch's legacy continues through his adored grandchildren, Emily, Hunter, Kyle, Lauren and Will, and his great-grandchildren, Aubrianna, Charlotte, Kenna, Miranda, Mitchell and Raelynn, who brought immense joy and pride to his life.
He is also survived by his cousin, Clare Greene, and special friends, Larry and Erma Feneis and Mike and Mary Costigan, who have been a source of enduring friendship and support. Butch was preceded in death by his parents Goldie Hart and Glen Hart.
Butch attended Sexton High School, after his schooling, he embarked on a fulfilling career at General Motors, where he dedicated many years before retiring in 1995. His work ethic and involvement were well-respected, and he left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the industry.
Beyond his professional life, Butch had a variety of interests that he pursued with enthusiasm. He was an avid bowler, known for his friendly competition and sportsmanship. Butch's love for good food and company often found him at Cugino's Restaurant in Grand Ledge, where he enjoyed many meals and memories with loved ones. His adventurous spirit shone through in his love for riding motorcycles, snowmobiles and hunting,
A member of the GM camping club, Butch was an avid camper who cherished his times at Orchard Beach in Manistee, MI and Leisure Lake in Sumner, MI. These excursions were not just pastimes but a way of life for Butch, who found peace and kinship around the campfire with friends and family while enjoying a Jack Daniel's with a splash of water and also doing an occasional "moose call" which the grandchildren loved. Additionally, while camping Butch could also be seen enjoying a large dish of ice cream at the local ice cream parlor with family and friends.
A visitation will be held on from 4-7pm on January 17, 2025 with a graveside service to follow at at later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in loving memory of Gary Hart to the Capital Area Humane Society, 7095 West Grand River Avenue, Lansing, MI 48906.
