Gary Hart Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mount Scott Funeral Home - Portland on Jan. 24, 2026.
Gary Francis Hart, 88 of Portland, Oregon passed away peacefully on January 10th, 2026. Born October 5th 1937 in Portland to Bernard and Madelyn Hart. Gary was a graduate of the University of Portland and served his country in the US Army. He married Jane Webber in 1965. They were married for 57 years until her passing in 2022.

He spent almost his entire career working as a Claims Adjuster for Retail Credit Company later known as Equifax. He was known for his investigative skills using surveillance, interviews, and record checks to uncover fraudulent worker's compensation claims. One memorable case involved a man who filed a claim stating that he could not work due to a back injury. Dad discovered that this man had a side hustle as a fishing guide. Dad booked himself on a trip with this man and watched as he hauled in heavy fish with ease … something that would be impossible if he truly had a debilitating back injury. When it came time for the hearing, Dad got the biggest kick when he walked into the courtroom and witnessed the man's stunned expression as he realized he had been caught.

Because of his skills and dedication to his company, Dad's workplace supported his passion for coaching. Every afternoon around 2:30, he would leave work to make it to the ballpark in time to coach our baseball and softball teams. He was there every day guiding us with patience and enthusiasm. This commitment to us was something he held dear and was a testament to his love and dedication to family.

From a young age, Dad's love for fishing grew as he explored countless streams, lakes and rivers throughout Oregon. As an adult, fishing became something he joyfully shared with those he loved most. He and Mom often went fishing together. He also brought his children and grandchildren along, passing down the peace and happiness he found on the water. Though health challenges eventually made it impossible for him to continue fishing, his love for the sport remained with him always.

Dad possessed an extraordinary memory and an in-depth knowledge of US History, rivaling that of a history professor. His passion for history and patriotism was something he shared with Mom who was also deeply knowledgeable and served as a Chapter Regent for the Daught ers of the American Revolution. Together they would enthusiastically delve into discussions about history and politics, captivating everyone around them with their knowledge and passion.

Dad has been a devoted member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church for 53 years. He actively participated in the men's club and served as an usher for many years. Later in life, as health challenges limited his mobility, the church provided him with a special chair at the back of the sanctuary. Even then, he found joy in connecting with others, especially the children. He became well known for handing out candy to the little ones, bringing smiles and warmth to everyone around him.

Gary is survived by his children, Matthew and Rachel (John); his grandchildren, Matthew (Betsy) and Grace. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Thomas, his wife Jane and his grandson, Cory.

A rosary will be held Thursday, February 5, 2026 at 11:30 A.M., with a funeral mass to follow at 12:00 P.M., at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. There will be a reception following in the parish hall. Full military honors and interment will be held at 3:00 P.M. at Willamette National Cemetery.
