Gary Maurice Henson was born on February 19,1951 in Camden
NJ to the late Earnestine Henson and Daniel Young. He departed
life on October 24, 2024.
Gary grew up in Camden NJ and graduated from Camden High
School. Gary continued his education and received his Bachelor
of Arts degree at Ramapo College in NJ and continued his
education at Teachers College of Columbia University, NYC.
In September 1985, Gary married Colette Peay and to this union
one son, Garett Henson was born. Gary was involved in the
planning of the Million Man March in 1995. Gary was also an
active member in the WBGO Jazz Leadership Society. In his
professional career, Gary spent over twenty years working for the
State of New Jersey and for Rockland County, New York as a
Social Worker. Gary had a strong passion for bonding, coaching,
and mentoring his son Garett, in lacrosse, ice hockey, and as a
scoutmaster. Gary loved the town of Ridgewood but more
importantly loved raising his son there.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son Garett Henson
(Breanna) of Upper Saddle River, his sisters and brothers
Deborah Young Johnson, Matthew Tony Young, Daniel Young,
Leonard Atkins, and Geraldine Atkins, cousins Pamela Harris
and Brenda Fraction, nephews and niece Ricky Johnson, Jeffrey
Young, Shurron Harris, Ebony Burrell of Blackwood and
Camden, two brother in laws Tony (Cathleen) and Jacques Peay
(Jill), nephews Anthony Peay and Bryce Joyner, cousin in laws
Carlos and William Peay of Ridgewood. Gary was preceded in
death by his wife Colette Peay-Henson, mother Earnestine
Henson, father Daniel Young, grandparents Marie and Albert
Henson, and his in-laws Louis Peay and Alveria McBurroughs.
