Gary Don Hogsten, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Born August 28,1942 in Madison Run, Gary was the son of the late Joseph Marvin and Sylvia Mundy Hogsten.
Gary lived his entire life in Madison Run. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church. After giving his life to Christ at a young age, he served as Deacon and sang in the church choir for many years. Gary was employed as a Cable Splicing Technician and retired from Verizon after more than 30 years of employment.
Throughout his life, Gary enjoyed many interests and hobbies. These included building hot rods, building and flying model airplanes, refinishing furniture and restoring the old house that would become his family refuge. He was a master piddler and fixer of all things. He was an avid reader, reading his Bible daily and countless books throughout the years. He also enjoyed journaling and chronicling events from his life. Many of these events were recorded and published in his memoir titled, Memories of Madison Run.
Gary found his greatest joy in his family. He was always devising new ways to keep his grandchildren (aka: The Rowdy Gang) entertained. He and Jackie hosted many family gatherings including Christmas dinners. They loved taking long rides through the countryside together. His quiet example and steadfast love were a blessing to his family.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Jacqueline Miller Hogsten; his daughters, Karen Spencer and husband Paul, Rebekah Kestner and husband Mark, and Amanda Wolfrey and husband Randy; his son in law Michael Richardson; a brother Ronnie Hogsten and his wife Darnita, sister-in-law, Cheryl Watson; 9 grandchildren, Ashleigh Sargent (Greg), Peyton Wallace (Mikael), Samuel, Sylvia and Spenser Richardson, Jase Wolfrey, Vivian, Carrie and Lilah Kestner; 5 great-grandchildren, Kelsie, Isabella and Cade Sargent, Avery and Arley Wallace; his nephews, W.A., Joseph, Damon and Brandon Hogsten, niece, Debra Bayles and their families and a host of special friends. Gary was recently preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Earl Watson.
The family would like to thank Dr. Prichard, Dr. Roberts, Dr. Shanmugasundaram, Hospice of the Piedmont and the many nurses and staff who helped care for Gary throughout his journey.
A funeral service will be held at Zion Baptist Church, on Saturday, February 21 at 11:00 with Pastor Daryl Harbin and Miles Vanskike officiating. Internment will follow at Graham Cemetery in Orange. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday evening from 6 to 7 p.m.
