Gary A. Hurd

Gary Hurd, age 71, passed away on July 21, 2025, surround by family after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on April 28, 1954, Gary lived a full life rooted in hard work, deep passions, and love for his family.
Gary was a man of many talents and interests. He had a lifelong love for the outdoors - enjoying deer hunting, trout fishing, camping, and boating. Some of his fondest memories were made around the campfire - sharing stories and making s'mores with those he loved most. A devoted grandfather, Gary always put his grandkids first, cherishing every moment spent with them.
He had a passion for westerns, especially Gunsmoke, and never missed a chance to cheer on his favorite teams - the Milwaukee Brewers, the Green Bay Packers, and the Texas Longhorns. Gary also took pride in his vegetable garden during retirement and was known for his skills as a cook and grill master in his younger days.
Gary began his career as a carpenter before taking to the open road as a truck driver - a job he loved. He was a master of the detour, always managing to get there faster than anyone else. Later, he founded his own construction company, focusing on remodels, additions, and decks. His craftsmanship left a lasting mark in the homes and lives of many.
Above all, Gary will be remembered for his quick wit, big heart, and the legacy of love and laughter he leaves behind. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend - and he will be deeply missed.
He is survived by the love of his life, Kelly Czappa; His children, Misty Hurd, Nichole Hurd (Jorden), Jacque Freund (Austin), Melissa Ellingson (Todd), Matthew Czappa, Katie Czappa, and Christopher Hafermann (Kelly); grandchildren, Allie (Eric), Autumn (Nick), Nadia, Mason, Corbyn, Blake, Austin, Hansi, Bri, Kienan, Clay, Haleigh, Jax, Bailey, Ashton, and Reece; and his great-grandchildren, Bentley, Nova, and Charli.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, grandparents, and his brother John.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 26th from 1:00–6:00 PM at Switched II in Nekoosa. All who knew and loved Gary are welcome to join us in sharing memories, laughter, and honoring the incredible life he lived.
