Gary R. Johnson

Gary R. Johnson, 81, of Pecatonica, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2026. Born April 1, 1944, in Freeport, IL, the son of Raymond J. and Marjorie L. (Eickman) Johnson. Graduate of Winnebago High School, Class of 1962 and Southern Illinois University. Gary married Julia Roskam on September 4, 1965. She predeceased him on March 18, 2020. He farmed all his life and was a member of Middle Creek Church.

Gary was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. While Gary farmed his whole life, he dedicated much of his time to his community, township, and church at Middle Creek. He lived with the virtues he also passed down to his family. His physical toughness and strength combined with kindness, humor, and wisdom. His ability to problem solve, often inventing solutions as he went, was a testament to his intelligence and abilities as a farmer. He had a remarkable ability to teach, without being overbearing, allowing his children and grandchildren to become independent and capable. He was always there for family and friends regardless of the situation, and without judgement.

Survived by his children, Jim (Peggy) Johnson, Lori (Tim) Cart, and David (Tea) Johnson; grandchildren, Katelyn (Brandon) Hergert, Jack, Claire, Eva, and Maksim Johnson; great-grandchildren, Camden and Charlotte Hergert; many extended family members and cherished friend, Betty Michles. Also predeceased by his parents; brothers, Lynn and Steven Johnson; and grandson, Benjamin Johnson.

Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Middle Creek Presbyterian Church, 12473 Montague Rd., Winnebago. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2026 at Olson Genandt Chapel, 602 N. Elida St., Winnebago. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Make A Wish Foundation, 1702 E.
