Gary A. Krzysiak, 77, of Algoma, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, October 13, 2025.
The son of Joseph and Agnes (Wavrunek) Krzysiak was born March 28, 1948, in Antigo, Wisconsin, attended St. Mary's Grade School and graduated from Antigo High School, Class of 1966.
With a great desire to see the world, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1966 to 1970. He was deployed to Japan, the Philippines, and Vietnam as a naval aviation mechanic. While stationed in Japan, he put 10,000 miles on his motorcycle, and throughout his life, he never lost his taste for Asian food.
Gary married Laura (Dier) Krzysiak on August 25, 1973, at St. Mary's Church in
Algoma, WI, and they recently celebrated their 52nd anniversary.
They were blessed with one son: Andrew M. Krzysiak (Kristina Sterup) of Maple Grove, Minnesota, and two precious grandchildren, Landon Andrew and Claire Ann.
After military service, Gary attended UW-Stevens Point and later completed a Sheet Metal Apprenticeship.
Gary was a proud member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 18, working as a journeyman for 30+ years.
In his retirement, he enjoyed creating custom copper work, including the cupola on the Algoma Chamber of Commerce Building, as well as various projects throughout Door and Kewaunee Counties.
Gary used his mechanical and project management skills on many improvement projects at St. Mary's School and church buildings.
In his "free" retirement time, Gary earned his commercial fishing license and worked for several charter services in the area. He also obtained his CDL license and worked for Lamar's Bus Service, driving tour groups throughout the Midwest.
Gary loved hunting and fishing, and shared those passions with his son, Andrew, and his lifelong friend, Ron Hull, with whom he hunted game birds. Many trips were taken to Colorado and Montana with Andrew and his hunting pals. The trips became the source for the oft-repeated stories about their hunting exploits that grew better with every telling.
Gary also loved traveling and took the family on many vacations, particularly to the Western United States. Winters were spent in warmer climates, including Yuma, Arizona, and Gulf Shores, Alabama. Gary's motorcycle often traveled with them and he cruised near and far whenever the weather permitted.
The Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola was a frequent stop, because Gary never lost his love for a beautiful Navy plane.
Gary loved to play Sheepshead, and Laura and he enjoyed many games with friends in Algoma, Antigo, and Gulf Shores. He particularly enjoyed playing with his mother-in-law, Jeanette, and his mentor, Louie Klemp, but rarely beat them!
Cribbage was also a favorite game, and Laura and he started each day with coffee and a few games.
Survivors include Laura, Andrew, Kristina, Landon, and Claire; Siblings Joe (Jeanie), Lake Havasu, Arizona; Kathy (Steve) Rolling, Antigo, Wisconsin; Cyndi (John) Hammond, Taylor, Wisconsin. Gary is also survived by his sisters-and brothers-in-law Mary (Roger) Nelson, Kristine (Floyd) Dauenhauer, Peggy Lynn, Thomas (Laurie) Dier, Jacqueline Toepfer (Kurt Bullard) Jeffrey (Loni) Dier and Michelle (Dan) Bastian, many nieces and nephews, and dear friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings: Ronald Krzysiak, Rita Rentmeester (brother-in-law, Lewellyn), James Krzysiak, and John Krzysiak; in-laws, Mahlon and Jeanette Dier, aunts and uncles, great-nephew Elden Steinhoff and many treasured friends.
Services will be held at St. Mary's Church, Algoma, on Monday, October 27, 2025, with visitation from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow with Father Bill Schwitchenberg presiding, followed by military rites at the church.
Gary will be interred at Queen of Peace Cemetery in Antigo, WI, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at 11:00 AM.
