DYER CHAPEL-Gary Dewayne McCowan, born on October 18, 1962, in Indianapolis, IN, passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville, TN. As a proud US Navy Seal, Gary exemplified courage and dedication throughout his life. He served as the CEO of Knox Recovery and Crossville Recovery, where he was known for his unwavering commitment to helping others. Gary was a man who would give the shirt off his back, displaying both a stubborn streak and a deep-seated disdain for seeing people hurt.
He loved to laugh, and his infectious humor brought joy to those around him. Gary is survived by his sons, Brent McCowan and Craig McCowan; daughter, Jessica Johnson (Joshua Hartt); brother, Phillip (Angela) McCowan; sister, Sherry Miller; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, AC and Wanda Padgett McCowan. Gary's legacy of kindness and strength will be forever cherished by his family and friends.
A memorial honoring Gary's life will be held at a later date.
