Gary Arthur Mulvey

Gary Arthur Mulvey passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024.

 

He was born on June 23, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Charles and Arlene (Bird) Mulvey. He grew up in Eastern Washington where he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad and his brother, Dave. A proud Richland Bomber, he loved spending time with his friends, teaching many of them to water-ski on the Columbia River. Gary loved baseball -- watching and playing -- and his mom loved to watch him play until her death when he was 14 years old. He enjoyed participating in Boy Scouts as a teenager and continued as a scout leader throughout his adult life.

 

Gary served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Northeastern States mission. A bright, dedicated student, he scored the second highest on the ACT of all incoming freshman during his first year at BYU. He attended Brigham Young University where he received a bachelor’s degree in history. He then attended Utah State University where he received a master’s degree in math.

 

He married the love of his life, Marilyn Miller, on August 27, 1965. Their focus quickly became raising their seven amazing children. Gary loves his children and was thrilled when they married and brought home two dozen grandchildren for him to enjoy. He loved attending all of his children’s and grandchildren’s performances, sporting events, and important milestones.

 

Gary spent his career teaching. He first taught History and English on the Navajo reservation in Sanders, Arizona. He then taught as a graduate assistant at Utah State while pursuing his master’s degree. The bulk of his career was teaching Math and History for 20 years at South Ogden Junior High. He finally graduated from teaching junior high to teaching high school and taught at Weber High, Fremont High (where he earned the nickname “Coach”) and Brighton High. One of his other teaching experiences was teaching Gospel Doctrine for many years.

 

A lifelong BYU fan, he had season tickets to BYU football for 25+ years. His children are sure he is pleased that the Cougars beat the Utes in their last match-up! Gary had many interests throughout his life: game birds (raising and hunting them), model trains, reading (usually peeking at the last page before starting it), coin collecting, family history (submitting the maximum possible number of names to Family Search), the New York Yankees, animals (no stray was safe!), popcorn and chocolate! Gary also loved camping, exploring National Parks, and traveling to many countries. His family is happy for this chance to brag about his achievements since he would never brag about them himself.

 

One of Gary’s favorite callings was serving in the Ogden and Bountiful LDS temples as an ordinance worker. He was looking forward to serving in the new Layton LDS temple -- apparently, he will be serving there from the other side of the veil.

 

Gary’s legacy includes: His eternal companion: Marilyn Miller Mulvey. His siblings: Dave (Lily) Mulvey, Paula (Alan) Noakes, His children: Brian (Denise) Mulvey, Stephen (Lori) Mulvey, Michelle (David) Allen, Scott (Jenny) Mulvey, Kevin (Ana Paola Dos Santos) Mulvey, Colleen (Danny) Bullard, Stacy (Mike) Marshall, His grandchildren: Davis, Clark (Laura), Isaac, Braden (Brittany), Stuart, Alexander (Synthea), Monalisa (Flacko), Franklin, Casey (Meghan), MaLynn (Steve), Miranda (José), Savannah (Matt), John (Madison), Jacob, Noah, Karli, Ronan, Desmond, Shannon, Brennan, Max, Packer, Evee, Cambria. His great-grandchildren: Sebastian, Maisie, Paige, Mylo, Autumn, Riley, Harleen, Jason.

 

Gary is preceded in death by his parents (Charles and Arlene Mulvey) and a grandson, Casey Allen.

 

Funeral services will be held Saturday March 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel Park Ward, 125 Chapel Street, Layton, Utah.  Friends may visit with family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service.

 

Interment, Salt Lake City Cemetery.
