Gary Lee Roark, 76, longtime Lordsburg resident, passed away at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City, NM, on December 3, 2024. Gary was born December 11, 1947, in Dallas, TX, to Clarence and Wanda Roark. The family moved to the Cotton City area when Gary was just a year old. He grew up helping on the family farm, alongside his brother Elwin (Bert) Roark and Clydia (Don) Frazier.
After graduating from Lordsburg High School in 1965, Gary joined the United States Army and served his country honorably. Upon his return from the military, he married Aurora Jensen. To that union three daughters were born--Catherine, Jennifer and Michelle.
After separating from Aurora, Gary was single for several years before meeting up with longtime friend, Vernis Shepherd. Gary and Vernis spent the next 28 years together, right up to the time of his passing.
Over the years, Gary was an over the road truck driver and later hauled fuel from El Paso to local truck stops and gas stations. He was an avid drag racing fan and really enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Gary is survived by Vernis Shepherd; daughters Catherine Roark and Jennifer Olson; grandchildren Nadine Arambula, Matthew Arambula (Sarah), Caitlin True (Josh), Jon Olson, Steven Olson, Jessica Olson and Kelly Romero; great grandchildren Marilyn Jo Graves, Kayne Romero and Aurora Billie Lee Arambula (expected in February 2025).
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Clydia; and daughter Michelle.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place at Terrazas Crematory. Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels and Crematory "Trusted care for the ones you love" ~ 575-537-0777. To send condolences, visit www.terrazasfuneralchapel.com.
