Gary Lawrence Shirk, Sr., age 60 of Moorefield, WV, touched the nail scarred hands of our Savior Thursday morning, June 9, 2022, after battling several illnesses throughout his earthly life. He was in his home surrounded by his family. Born on January 22, 1962, in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of the late John Richard Shirk, Sr. and Eleanor Joy Sherman Shirk. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a nurturing Mother-in-Law, Patricia Ann Wyman, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He attended Tollgate Elementary School, then Moorefield High School where he was a member of the Class of 1981. Gary devoted his life to leading his family to Christ. He was known as a proud and loving husband, dad, and grandaddy, but also everyone’s favorite uncle. He was the life of the party and could always put a smile on anyone’s face. His ultimate gift was humor and storytelling. The front door to his home was always open for others. He loved to see people enjoying time together, usually over a meal in which he cooked.
He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, and traveling. He was also an avid Chicago Bears and Baltimore Orioles fan. He would often refer to his wife as his best friend. He and his wife had a strong marriage founded upon love and centered around the Lord. Presently, he is a member of Amplified Church, and his family, and friends will miss him tremendously.
Surviving is his caring wife of 36 years, Jane Elizabeth Shirk; two sons, Gary (Monica) Shirk, Jr. of Maysville, WV, and Benjamin Shirk of Moorefield, WV; two grandchildren, Joshua Malachi Shirk and Abigail Elizabeth Shirk; five brothers, Rick (Aneita) Shirk, Danny Shirk, Mike Shirk, Scott (Patsy) Shirk, and Lincoln Shirk; numerous nieces and nephews (that were like children to him), in-laws, aunts, uncles, and friends.
Funeral Services will be conducted 5:00 PM Sunday, June 12, 2022, at the Fraley Funeral Home Chapel, 107 Washington Street with his son, Pastor Gary Shirk, Jr. officiant. Sunset Interment is scheduled at 8:30 PM at the Lahmansville Cemetery, Patterson Creek Road, Lahmansville, WV. The family will receive friends from 4 – 7 PM Saturday at the funeral home. Due to the current COVID-19 recommendations, wearing of masks and social distancing by individuals unvaccinated is recommended.
Memorials may be directed to the Joshua Shirk Medical Trust fund, c/o Summit Community Bank, 90 South Grove Street, Petersburg, WV 26847.
