Gary Shupe Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Heritage Cremation & Burial Society - Greater Canton Area on Feb. 23, 2026.
Gary V. Shupe, 74, passed unexpectedly in the comfort of his home in Canton, Ohio, on February 19, 2026. Gary was an avid member of the Canton-McKinley Rifle and Pistol Club, where he found both spirited competition and deep camaraderie. The friendships he built there meant a great deal to him. He formed many lasting bonds throughout his life, including cherished friendships that began in childhood. Friends and family were always very important to Gary.

He shared a particularly special friendship with Mike Roberts, who was an incredible support throughout Gary's life and continues to be a source of strength and support for his family.

Gary had a deep love of learning and a natural gift for understanding how things worked. He enjoyed tinkering and would not rest until he fully understood the mechanics of something. He appreciated craftsmanship and held great respect for anyone skilled in their trade.

A man of many interests, Gary loved music and played both the violin and guitar. He was also talented in drawing and possessed a genuine curiosity about nearly every subject. Learning brought him joy, and he approached life with an inquisitive mind.

Gary also had a profound love for animals. He cared for them deeply, and they brought him great comfort and companionship throughout his life. His beloved cat, Taz, who lived to be 22 years old, meant the world to him and held a special place in his heart.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Diane Shupe, whom he loved dearly; his daughter Laurie Shupe, and son-in-law, Tony Pentello; and his three grandchildren, Cayden Pentello and his wife, Lauren, Ethan Pentello, and Mitchell Pentello. He is also survived by his beloved brother-in-law Dwain Sullivan; Dwain's wife Carol Sullivan; and their children, Eric and Stephanie; as well as his acquired niece and nephew Mike Girard and Angela Clay.

He was preceded in death by his father, Vince Shupe, a former professional baseball player for the Padres and the Braves; his mother Dorothy Zehnder; and his sister, Kathleen Crowther.

Gary will be remembered for his friendships, his passions, his compassion, and the love he held for those closest to him.

There will be no funeral or calling hours. A celebration of life will be arranged in the weeks to come, with details to be shared with family and friends. Condolences may be shared online at www.heritagecremationsociety.com

Diane & family, deeply sorry to hear the news. We had many discussions at your house & at the range. I often had to think for a second if he was just kidding around, but it was all enjoyable. My grandson remembers him fondly, after all; Gary marked his height changes for years on the door jamb at the indoor range . So sorry for your loss, Jeff Wenum
