Gary Smorgala Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Webb Funeral Home - Shelbyville on Dec. 12, 2025.
Gary John Smorgala, 76, Shelbyville, died Friday, December 12, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family following a long illness. A native of Port Clinton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Joseph John Smorgala and Marian Elisabeth Oles Armitage. He attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He later completed his associate's degree at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio. He served as plant manager for Heraeus Corporation, a precious metals refinery business. In his leisure time, he enjoyed watching all kinds of sports. He coached Little League baseball when his son was a child. He was a history buff and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Being born on Lake Erie, he naturally loved the water. He lived in Florida for a period of time, where deep-sea fishing became a favorite pastime. He was Catholic by faith.

In addition to his parents, one brother, Larry Joseph Smorgala, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Deborah Cooley Smorgala of Shelbyville; his daughter, Nicole Marie Anderson (Drew) of Shelbyville; his son, Kevin John Smorgala (Morgan Elizabeth) of Charlotte, NC; his sister, Deborah Jane Morelli of Marathon, FL and five grandchildren, Jaylin Anderson, Brynlee Anderson, Jonah Anderson, Marian Smorgala and Marlowe Smorgala.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 in the chapel at Grove Hill Cemetery. Burial will follow at Grove Hill Cemetery.

Webb Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.webbfuneralhome.com.

So very sad to hear of Gary´s passing. His family and mine spent very pleasant times together when we both worked for a precious metal recovery business. Prayers for his family.
