Gary Van Doren

Gary Van Doren, 80, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away, Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022. He enjoyed a long life filled with family and friends.

Gary was born Dec. 18, 1941, to Elmer and Virginia Van Doren of Webster Groves, Missouri. He attended Coyle High School in Kirkwood, followed by Saint Louis University where he was part of the Rugby Club-­a time he referred to as "one of the best in his life." After graduating from SLU in 1963, he joined the Marine Corps where he served in active duty and as a reservist until 1969.

Gary was married twice and raised eight children and stepchildren with his loving wife, Mary Ann, whom he met while they both worked at United Lumber. Gary was a hard worker, and enjoyed a successful fitness career where he won many titles in the competitive bodybuilding and powerlifting industry. Throughout his life, he owned and maintained his own health clubs where he was able to share his love of fitness with others. After retiring from competing, he continued to strength train even after his 80th birthday.

Gary also worked in, and would eventually retire from, the home improvement industry, painting local houses and businesses. It was a job he loved and took great pride in.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed bird watching, listening to country music, gardening, and caring for his animals. He had a wide variety of interests, although none greater than spending time with his wife until she passed in July of last year.

Gary is survived by his children and stepchildren: Kim Nappier-Marshall, Terri Nappier, Mary Birchem, Steve Van Doren, John Van Doren, Matt Van Doren, and Danielle Joeckel. He was loved by his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and daughters- and sons-in-law. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann (2021); his stepson, Mark Nappier (2012); and his parents and brother.

A social and personable man, Gary had many friends. He enjoyed meeting new people and socializing with his gym friends and neighbors. He cared deeply for his family and will truly be missed.
