Gerald "Gary" Francis Waner, age 77, passed away on May 17, 2023, in Warrensburg, Missouri.
He was born on August 23, 1945, in Newton, Kansas to Virgil Waner and Mabel (Winkley) Waner. Gary was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and esteemed member of the community. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him. On July 22, 1967, Gary married Karen Kay Hess, in Florence, Kansas.
Gary was a highly educated individual, holding a doctorate degree from the University of Missouri Columbia as well as a bachelor's and master's degree from Emporia State University. He dedicated his career to education as a high school teacher and college professor. Outside of his profession, Gary was a member of many social organizations including the American Legion Riders, airplane clubs, and many others.
Gary possessed a deep interest and talent as a gunsmith. His technical skills and knowledge in this field were remarkable, and he approached his craft with dedication. His expertise and passion for his interests were evident to all who encountered him.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife, Karen Waner, who supported him in all aspects of life. He is also survived by his son, Bryant Waner, and his wife Heather in Overland Park, Kansas; his son, Grant Waner, and his wife Katie, also in Overland Park, Kansas; his daughter-in-law, Lori Waner in Warrensburg, Missouri; and his 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Mabel Waner, and his son, Vincent Waner.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 26, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg, Missouri. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Gary are invited to attend and celebrate his remarkable life.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Gary's memory to a charity of your choice.
