Gene V. Dickey of Cozad passed away Friday, November 29, 2024 at Emerald Care Nursing at the age of 86. He was born on October 23, 1938, in Hemingford, Nebraska to Oscar and Wilma (Keane) Dickey. He was the sixth of nine children. He was known for his playful spirit as a boy, often enjoying scaring anyone he could with scary masks or by hiding under beds to grab an ankle.

He grew up in Anselmo, Nebraska where he enjoyed his childhood and education. Gene was known as a good athlete who loved playing football and basketball in his younger years. Even as he aged, he took delight in running in road races and participated in a men's basketball team, showcasing his enduring passion for sports.

He was married to Ardyce Hansen on May 30, 1971, at her parents' home in Cozad. Gene was a member of both St. Anselm's Catholic Church and Christ the King Catholic Church, where he found community and connection.

Gene attended Kearney State College, earning a two-year teaching degree. He began his career teaching at rural schools before making his way to Cozad, where he found work at Monroe Auto. Eventually, he became part owner of Hansen and Waters/Countryside Implement, taking over the family business from his father-in-law, Herman Hansen. Gene later worked at Palmer Monument until his retirement. He was known for his genuine love of visiting and connecting with people across all communities.

Gene had a cheerful spirit and never met a stranger. He had a special knack for making connections and always brightened the days of those around him. He is fondly remembered by his family for his love of double bubble gum, Werthers Candy, and Dairy Queen Butterscotch Dilly Bars, which he indulged in daily, keeping them hidden in the bottom of the garage freezer so his wife, Ardyce, wouldn't discover them. Family held a special place in Gene's heart, particularly his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the greatest joy in his life.

Outside of his work, Gene enjoyed watching Husker football, Royals baseball, and cheering on the Cozad Haymakers. He enjoyed is daily coffee time with friends and learning the daily town news. His zest for life and ability to connect with others will always be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Ardyce; an infant son; brothers Alvin, Howard and Dallas; sisters Cleone, Vivian, Delores and Norma.

Survivors include his sister, Wanda (Greg) Nielson of Valentine; his daughter, Stacy (Chris) Cole of Hastings, MN; grandchildren, Matt Mroczek (fiancé Bri McNelly) and Brooke Hernday, both of Minnesota and Mackenzie Cole of Arkansas; great grandchildren, Swaisen Mroczek and Alayna and Collin Hernday; and many other extended family and friends.

Cremation was chosen Cremation was chosen with a private family memorial service. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. Those wishing to sign the register book may do so Wednesday, December 4, 2024 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Berryman Funeral Home.
