Anderson Funeral Home and CrematoryGene Stephen Harstad, son of Neil and Gladys Harstad, was born on June 11, 1941, and passed away on November 28, 2025, at the age of 84. He grew up on a farm in rural southwestern Minnesota, graduating from Balaton High School in 1959. He received his undergraduate degree in education at SDSU and MS degree in school administration from Northern State University.
Over the course of his career, Gene worked as a teacher, principal, and superintendent in the South Dakota towns of Redfield, Lake Preston, Bristol, Britton, Wilmot, and Rosholt. Early in his teaching career he met Jacquelyn Morehouse and they wed on May 30, 1964, in Bristol, SD. Gene spent many summers painting houses, fishing, gardening, and cherishing countless weekends at Enemy Swim Lake with family and friends.
In retirement, Gene and Jackie moved to Alexandria, MN to be close to family. They fell in love with the area and enjoyed participating in many social groups. Following Jackie’s death in 2020, Gene moved to Grand Arbor and quickly embraced new friendships and the activities that made his time there so enjoyable.
He found happiness in the simple things that made life full; reading, watching sports, eating ice cream, and a game of cards. Canasta was a favorite, bringing out his competitive spirit even against the grandchildren. He cherished the peacefulness of being at his cabin on Lake Mary.
Gene was known for his strong faith, kindness, and optimistic spirit. His sharp memory for details often surprised people; he remembered stories, dates, and little moments that mattered.
Above all else, he valued family. Nothing made him happier than having everyone together. His greatest joy came from the moments shared around a table conversing and playing games, traveling, or simply being in each other’s company. Family was his center, his pride, and his greatest blessing.
Gene is survived by his daughter, Dawn (Greg) Weddle of Geneva IL; son David (Darla) Harstad of Alexandria; grandchildren: Briana Olson, Carly Weddle, Connor Weddle, Zachary Harstad and Lucas Harstad; great grandchildren: Everett and Gwendolyn; sister Mary (David) Compas; sister-in-law, Sandy Harstad; and very special friend, Karen White.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother David, wife Jackie, and daughter Dana.
A celebration of life Gene's will be held at Grand Arbor in Alexandria, Minnesota on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 3:00 pm. No matter the weather, Gene always felt each day was a good day for ice cream so please join the family following the service for an ice cream social.
To honor Gene’s memory, learn a new card game, express gratitude to a former teacher, or treat a friend to ice cream - small gestures that reflect the kindness he lived by.
