Eugene “Gene” Robert Hawes was born January 30, 1955. Gene grew up in Independence, MO. In 1973, he graduated from Truman High School, where he met Jan through a friend. In April of 1976, he married Jan, and they had two children, Trish and Jon. He passed peacefully at home in Pleasant Hill, MO on Thursday March 28, 2024.

To support his family, Gene started his career as a mechanic at an automobile shop in Lees Summit, MO before moving to Iowa to become a farmer. A few years later, Gene moved his family back to Kansas City where he worked at several companies building hollow metal doors and frames before retiring.

Gene was an active member of Scout Troop 469 of Raytown, MO with his son, Jon. While assisting his son through his scouting career and mentoring many other scouts, Gene held many positions, including Scout Master, Camp Master, Quarter Master, and Troop Photographer. He attended H Roe Bartle Scout Reservation for many years as well as went on four high adventure trips with the scout troop. In 2021, Gene transferred to troop 220 in Lees Summit MO to assist his grandson in his scouting career. Gene enjoyed spending time with his family on campouts, 4th of July, Halloween, haunted hayrides, and get togethers. He loved being outdoors to hunt and fish from his pond. He enjoyed woodworking, building things, and working on projects with others.

He is survived by his wife, Jan Hawes; his daughter Trish Baldwin; his son Jon Hawes and his wife Anna; grandchildren Madison, Gavyn, Guinevere, and Gracie; sister-In-law Susan Hawes; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
