Major Gene Edward Malott (Ret.) - 2/26/26
Major Gene Edward Malott, beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family.
Gene grew up in
Hagerstown, MD before proudly entering service in the United States Army. During his military career, he served his country with distinction and honor. While stationed overseas, he married the love of his life, Barbara "Bobbie" Malott, in Orléans, France. Together they built a life grounded in love, dedication, and family while raising their two children, Tracey Lynn Malott Powell and Kelly Lee Malott.
Throughout his distinguished Army career, Major Malott earned numerous honors and commendations for his service, including the Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He also completed advanced military education at the Army Command and General Staff College (1980). His exemplary service eventually led him and his family to Virginia, where he continued his career with the Department of Defense.
Gene and Bobbie spent many years in Virginia, where they raised their family and built lifelong friendships. Later in life, drawn by his love of golf, warm sunshine, and coastal living, Gene and Bobbie retired to
Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, where he enjoyed the slower pace of life and cherished time with family.
Gene is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara "Bobbie" Malott of
Murrells Inlet, SC; his daughter Tracey Powell of
Cary, NC; his son Kelly Malott of
Winston-Salem, NC; and his cherished grandchildren Jessica and husband Smith of Wilmington, NC; Matthew of Wilmington, NC; Katherine of
Raleigh, NC; Taylor of
Fredericksburg, VA and Patrick of
Winston-Salem, NC. His sisters Betty Shrader of
Hagerstown, MD, Barb Middleton of FL, brother Clarence Edward "Eddie" Malott of TN along with countless nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents Goldie Gladys and Clarence Edward Malott, brother Harry Malott and sister Mildred "Millie" Wilson of
Hagerstown, MD.
Gene will be remembered for his deep love of family, his dedication to service, his quiet strength, and the warmth and humor he brought to those around him. His legacy of integrity, commitment, and love will live on through the lives he touched. Gene will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, and the family asks that any donations in his honor be made to the
Wounded Warrior Project or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
