Gene J. Orton

Gene J. Orton, 87, passed away on October 8, 2025, in Montross, NY. Born on November 19, 1937, in Sharon, CT, Gene served honorably in the United States Air Force before embarking on a career as a driver for Effron Oil Company in Poughkeepsie, NY. He also owned and operated his own paving company, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.
Gene was a formidable competitor and victor of the 1954 Tough Man Competition, a testament to his strength and determination. This passion and vigor defined much of his life's pursuits.
He is survived by a loving family, including Debbie and Louie Mazzella, Gene Orton, John and Laura Greene, Gina Orton, and Dave and Jean VanTassel, all of Poughkeepsie, NY. His brother, John Orton, resides in Highland, NY. Gene also leaves behind several cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly.
A graveside service will be held to honor Gene's life at 11:30 am at the Saratoga National Cemetery on Monday, October 20, 2025.
